Friday: There Was an Old Woman

Mar 1, 2011   //   by Miss Kim   //   Daily Lessons  //  No Comments

Calendar: Discussed calendar in English and Spanish.

Brainstorm/Fun Facts:  Discussed:  What kind of home do you live in? Did you know there are many different kinds of homes: apartments, houses, mobile homes, huts and tents?  Did the rhyme: “There Was an Old Woman”.  Changed part of the rhyme to replace with a child’s name and send them off to bed.

Logic:  Discussed: Would you like to live in a shoe?  We had a balance made with paper and one side said “no” and the other side said “yes”.  As the children answered the prior question they came up and clipped a clothes pin to their answer on if they wanted to live in a shoe.  We watched as the scale tipped to the side with the most clothes pins.  We discussed the balance and what was happening.  We also counted how many said “yes” and how many said “no”.

Health and Safety: Discussed: How often should you eat sweets? I explained that a healthy diet includes a balance of many fruits and vegetables, protein, grain and dairy. Sweets and oil should be limited to very little. I showed the children the Kid Chef Piece and asked the children if they know which food group this represents. I placed the piece in the middle of the floor. I invited the children to take off one shoe and pass the shoes around the circle as the rhyme was recited. When, the rhyme stopped, I invited the children to find the owner of the shoe they were holding and give it with a hug.

Chit Chat: Discussed: How many people are in your family? The children each had a turn to go around and count the number of people in their family. We counted the total number of children in the Shoe Book Project together.

Book Worm:Discussed: What other items would be silly for someone to live in? The children said that it would be silly if someone lived in a dog house, bird house, and a mailbox. I found pictures of  objects and asked the children if it would be silly if they lived there. I found a picture of a toaster, an oven, a refrigerator, and teapot. The children all agreed that they would all be silly places to live.

Closing Time:Discussed: What do you do before you got to bed? the children said that they brushed their teeth, put their PJ’s on, went potty, and read a bedtime story. I invited the children to lay on their backs and listen to the song, “There was an Old Woman,” Track 14, Climb into Nursery Rhymes CD. During  the first verse,  children continued lying on their backs while raising their legs up and down. Each time the songs repeat, I invited the children to move a different part of their bodies while lying on the floor throughout the verse.
