Wednesday: A Day at the Pond

Jun 2, 2011   //   by Miss Kim   //   Daily Lessons  //  No Comments

Calendar: Discussed calendar in English and Spanish.

Brainstorm/Fun Facts:   The children told what they know about a pond.  Discussed:  What would you do if you spent an entire day at the pond?  Some people have picnics at the pond, catch frogs or fish, take pictures, draw or write, swim, or even just explore as they spend time at the pond.  We had a picnic at the pond on Tuesday for lunch.  The kids loved that!!  Fun Facts:  Ponds are nothing more than depressions in the ground where water collects.  They are quiet, shallow bodies of water that allow enough sunlight to reach their bottom.  Pond animals include birds, crayfish, fish, frogs, insects and turtles.  Water temperature of ponds is fairly even from top to bottom and changes with the outside air temperature.

Health & Safety:  Discussed:  What is your favorite thing that might be found by a pond?  The kids looked at the Theme Poster and took turns naming their favorite image.  At the end of lessons the children will get to “fish at the pond” and eat them!  We had blue gelatin with slices of grapes at the bottom to represent turtles.  The children added gold fish to the top of their own bowl of jello and then took a pretzel rod that we added cream cheese to the top of it.  They then used their pretzel rod as the fishing pole and caught the fish in the cream cheese.  They got to eat them.  They also ate their ponds and the turtles.

Learning Approach:  Which letter sounds did you remember finding near the pond?  We looked at our Little Learning Cards and discussed each.  The children then came up one at a time and rolled a Brain box.  They discussed what they got on the brain box and found the little learning card that matched the brain box.

Social Skills:  Discussed:  What food would you like to take with you on a picnic?

Emergent Writing:  Discussed:  What is your favorite memory from this month at the pond?  A favorite topic, game, project?  We are going to make our class book so the children brainstormed what they wanted Miss Felicia to put on the cover of our class book.  Each child then took a page from the class book and had to draw a picture about something that they learned from this month about ponds.  They then each told Miss Corrie what their picture  was about and she wrote their information on the page.  This book will be at the front door for everyone to read!
