Thursday: New Year Celebration

Calendar:  Discussed the date in English and Spanish and wrote it in number form. Ava helped us do the calendar today.  She found the day of the week and month of the year in Spanish.  She told us the weather and found the numbers for the calendar.  She reviewed our colors, shapes and Sign Language words.  

Brainstorm/Fun Facts:  Discussed:  How does your family celebrate the New Year?  Fun Facts:  Discussed how Dec. 31st is the last day of the year.  The modern ball that is dropped is made from Waterford Crystal and weighs over 1, 000 pounds.  New York is where the ball drops.  

Creative Development:  Discussed:  How often do you have a birthday?  Each child came up and found the month that their birthday was in.  We counted how many months  that was away from now.  Each child will do a project on the calendar to save for next year and see how they have changed.

Language and Literacy:  Discussed:  What is a promise?  Have you ever made a promise to someone?  On New Year’s Day many people make promises.  We brainstormed some ideas of the kinds of promises we can make about our behavior, actions or choices.  Each child wrote a Promise they will make to themselves or a family member this year.  

Physical Development:  Discussed:  What is your favorite part of a celebration or party?  We discussed how all parties have food at them.  We used some open snacks from the pantry to make a party-mix snack.  They all got to eat it and enjoy.

Creative Development:   Discussed:  What kind of activities does your family do on New Year’s Eve?  Many people celebrate New Year’s with confetti or fireworks.  Each child took one piece of colored paper.  I had them rip the paper into pieces.  I then counted to three and had the children throw the pieces in the air and say “Happy New Year!”  We did this several times because we had so much fun throwing our confetti. 

Afternoon Centers:   Center 1: Lego’s  Center 2:  My Calendar-  They children will put their left and right hand prints on a calendar.  We will then measure how tall they are and weigh them.  They can keep this till the next year to see how they have changed in a year.  The children will also find their birth-date on the calendar.   Center 3:  Name Tags-  The children will practice writing their names.  Center 4:              Passport Art-  The children will put together their own passport book. They will draw a self portrait, write their names and add stickers to places they could go.
