Friday: Fish

Calendar:  Discussed the date in English and Spanish and wrote it in number form. Lucas put the number on the calendar, discussed the weather and found the day of the week in Spanish.  He reviewed the Spanish, Sign Language, shapes, colors and Sight words.

Fun Facts/Brainstorming:  Reviewed what the children learned about birds.  Today the children told us what they know about fish.  We looked at pictures of different fish and discussed some fun facts.

Creative Development:  Discuss: Where do you live? Where do you think a pet fish could live?  We looked at the fish bowls that the children made in afternoon centers.

Mathematics and Reasoning:  Discuss: How big do you think you are? How big is a fish?  Each child took off one of his/her shoes.  We compared the size of each child’s fish (shoe) and see which fish is the biggest and smallest.  The children estimated how many fish (shoe lengths) long his leg is.  We wrote the estimates down.  We then used the shoe to measure the length each child’s leg.  We compared this length to the estimations.  What else can you measure with the fish (shoe)?

Social and Emotional Development:  Discuss: How would you take care of a fish’s home?  Explained that since fish live in water, it is important that their water is clean.  Fish also enjoy having places to hide or plants to feed on.  The children worked together to gather objects in the room to make a fish habitat.  We discussed the objects they grabbed and why the fish would like that.

Language and Literacy:  Discuss: What would you feed a fish?  Explained that different fish like different types of food.  We put the Phonic tags on the floor and pretended they were fish.  The children held the magnet and to catch the fish (Phonic tag).  They had to tell us the picture and discuss if this is something a fish would eat.  They then placed that tag on the correct matching letter.  Each child had a chance to catch one of the tags and place it on the matching letters.

Physical Development:  Discuss: What kind of pet do you have or would you like to have?  We looked at their My Little Journals and discussed the last page of the book.  The children had to tell us the home of the pet.

Afternoon Centers:  Center 1:Outside play Center 2: My Little Journal- They children drew a line from the pet to its home.
