Calendar:  Discussed the date in English and Spanish and wrote it in number form.  Gretchen put he number on the calendar, discussed the weather and found the day of the week in Spanish. Gretchen reviewed the colors, shapes and Sign Language words.

Brainstorm/Fun Facts:  Reviewed what we learned about strength.   Today the children told me everything they know about Balance.  This was hard for them to understand until I showed them how to balance.  Fun facts:  There is a mechanism in the inner ear that controls our balance.  Eyesight allows the body to align correctly with the room.  Both the inner ear and muscle sensory work together to balance movement.  You also have to balance your diet.

Creative Development:  Discussed:  How would you balance if you were a (insert animal) (lion, bear)? I place a foam shape on the floor. I had one child run to the shape, stand on it and balance on one foot.  We counted to see how long they could balance on one foot without the other one touching the ground.  They will make a Bear Mask in afternoon centers.

Language and Literacy:  Discussed:  What kind of things can you balance on your hand?  Everyone tried to balance a marker standing up.  We looked at the Brain Box and tried to balance it on our fingers.  Each child came up one at a time and tried to balance the Brain Box and when it fell they had to follow the directions that landed face up.  Brain Box sides said:  Do 11 jumping jacks; Stomp your feet 12 times; Jog to something pink in the room; Walk backwards to something red in the room; Make a heart with your hands; Kick your feet 13 times.

Mathematics and Reasoning:  Discussed:  What would happen if you only ate one type of food every day?  We discussed the 5 food groups and why it is important to eat something out of each food group to get all our vitamins and stay healthy.  We looked at our My Little Journals and discussed the foods on the back of the book and which food belonged to which food group.

Physical Development:  Discussed:  What tricks can you do as you balance?  I spread some of the foam shapes in a circle and then lined some of the foam shapes up in another area.  I had each child come up one at a time.  They had to jump on one foot around the circle of foam shapes.  They had to stand on one foot and try to clap 13 times.  They then had to go to the line of foam shapes and pretend it was a balance beam and walk on them without falling off.  I then had them walk backwards with their eyes closed.  They had a lot of fun but it was very hard for them to stand on one foot.

Show and Tell:  Each child brought in one piece of play food!  They had to come up and tell us what food it was and which food group it belonged in.

Afternoon Centers:   Center 1:Little People toys  Center 2:  Bear Mask-  The children cut out a foam nose to glue on the mask.  They then tore the napkin into pieces to glue on the mask for fur.  We put our masks on and pretended to be bears balancing on two feet.    Center 3:  My Little Journal- The children will go to the back page of the journal.  They will draw a line from the food to the matching food group.
