Calendar: Discussed calendar in English and Spanish. Gretchen added the number to the calendar, discussed the weather and found the day of the week in Spanish.  She reviewed our Spanish and Sign language words.

Brainstorm/Fun Facts: We reviewed what we learned about the Leaning Tower of Pisa.  The children told me what they know about Machu Picchu.  Discussed:  How old are you?  How old is your city?  Machu Picchu is a very, very old city.  It is located on a mountain in Peru, South America. It is called the “Lost City” because it was built and abandoned a long time ago.  Fun Facts:  Machu Picchu, located in the mountains of Peru, is one of South America’s most popular tourism destination.  The Incas started building the site in 1420.  Theories state it was a home for Inca outcasts, a fallback of defensive positions against invaders or a regional capital. It was completed in 1462.  It was abandoned sometime in early 1500s.  Some think a disease such as malaria swept through the city while others believe a separate tribe conquered the site. It has roughly 200 buildings.

Physical Science:  Discussed:  What food do you think people in Machu Picchu ate?  The layers of rock and land found in the city of Machu Picchu lead scientists to believe that the Incas used the land to grow gardens.  Discussed where we have a garden and how we keep it protected.

Emergent Writing:  Discussed:  What is your favorite memory from this month?  We looked at the World Wonders Book and reviewed all the places we learned about.  We also went through the lesson book and reviewed what we learned about. Each child took a page from the class book and drew a picture of what they learned about.  They then came up one at a time to tell me what to write about their picture and what they learned.

Learning Approach:  Discussed:  Explained that only some of the walls from Machu Picchu are still standing, but we can use those walls to think about the past.  We looked at all our Little Learning cards and reviewed our shape, numbers, letters and colors.

Global Citizenship:  Discussed:  Where do you live on the map? We looked at he World Map.  We then went through our World Wonders book and found each place on the World Map.

Tumble Bus Day: See the form by the front door for the activities of the day.

Afternoon Centers: Center 1: Outside Play  Center 2: Little Learning Cards-  The children will color and cut out their cards.  Center 3:  Seeds and Soil Art-  The children will place a seed at the base of each plant.  The children will then use brown paint as soil to cover the seeds.  They will then use markers to color the rest of the parts of the plants.
