Monday: Jungle Jobs

Jun 4, 2012   //   by Miss Kim   //   Daily Lessons  //  No Comments

Calendar:  Discussed calendar in English and Spanish.  We took down May’s calendar and discussed our new month.  We wrote the date in English and Spanish.  We reviewed our Spanish and Sign language words.

Brainstorm/Fun Facts:  We reviewed what they learned about Jungle Food!  Today the children told me everything they know about Jungle Jobs. Fun Facts:  They have to get up early and begin working.  The girls look after their little sister, brother, niece or nephew.  They also help cook, grate manioc, carry heavy backpacks and get water.  The boys will hunt with the men in the village, fish, farm and weave baskets.  They also spend a lot of time in the jungle as part of their learning and training to become excellent hunters and providers for their families.  In their free time, both boys and girls love to go swimming in the river, and there are plenty of rivers around.  The girls like to play with hand-made dolls and the boys like to shoot their bows and arrows and play in the forest.

Visual Art:  Discussed:  What do people in the jungle use to make baskets?  They use tall weeds and grasses.  We looked at the spider that they did in afternoon centers.  We discussed how to weave the spiders.

Patterns:  Discussed:  What do houses look like in the Jungle?  Many homes are built up high on stilts.  This keeps the floor dry.  The ground in the rainforest is very wet.  We looked at the Measure Me Tool and we counted the ladder rungs.  We then used it to guess how many rungs long things were in the room.  I also used some of the children’s body parts.  We guessed how many rungs long they were and then measured them to find out if we were right.

Social Skills:    Discussed:  What could you do to help save the rainforests? How do you think recycling helps?  We discussed how if we recycle then we don’t have to cut more trees down and can make new things out of the recycled materials.  Show and Tell:  The children each brought in an item that can be recycled.  They came up one at a time and discussed each of their items.  We also discussed what we are going to do with these items.

Emergent Writing:   Discussed:  What type of medicine have you taken?  Most of the medicines are made from plants in the rainforest.  Scientists have followed ants for a long time to help them find more out about medicines and how they survive.    We looked at the back page of their My Little Journals and discussed the capital and lower case letters.  We helped the worker ants get back to their homes.

Afternoon Centers:  Center 1: Outside Play  Center 2:  Paint a pretty Jungle Picture
