Tuesday: Jungle Home

Jun 5, 2012   //   by Miss Kim   //   Daily Lessons  //  No Comments

Calendar:  Discussed calendar in English and Spanish.  We wrote the date in English and Spanish.  We found the day of the week in Spanish. We reviewed our Spanish and Sign Language words.

Brainstorm/Fun Facts:  We reviewed what we learned about Jungle Jobs.  Today the children told me everything they know about homes in the jungle?  People and animals use the natural resources to build their homes.  Fun Facts:  A lot of the houses do not have walls because they don’t need them.  It doesn’t get cold and they don’t need much privacy.  Privacy to them is a lot different than privacy is to us.  They practice privacy when they bathe in the river.  Even though they don’t wear a lot of clothing usually, the women bathe at one time or place and the men at another.  You would not have your own room in a jungle house.  To build their homes they put some poles to support a thatched roof.  Since it rains here so much, they do a good job in making the roof to have as few leaks as possible.

Logic:  Discussed:  What happens if you build your house on wet ground?  We looked at a piece of cardboard and discussed what we thought would happen to it if we put it in water.  I put one side of the cardboard in water.  We let it soak in there.  I then pulled it out and allowed each child to come up and feel the dry and wet side of the cardboard.  They told me what they felt.  We left the cardboard in water for a long time and discussed what happened to it.  We then used the large blocks to show them what Stilts are and how to build a house on stilts.

Emergent Writing:  Discussed:  What natural materials could you find outside to build a home?  What do wild animals near your home use to build homes.  Each child took a page of the class book and colored something they learned about a Rainforest.  They brought the picture up to me and told me what to write. They were to tell me facts about the Rainforest that they learned.

Learning Approach:    Discussed:  What happens when a leaf gets wet?  Do you think a leaf would make a good roof?  We looked at the Little Learning Cards and discussed each card in detail:  Zz, blue, Gg, 19, Aa, green, octagon, 20.

Health and Safety:  Discussed:  If you lived in a tree, in what part of the tree would you want to live?  The rainforest is filled with trees.  Insects and animals live under the bark, on leaves, and hang from branches.

Afternoon Centers:  Center 1:  Outside Play  Center 2: Make birthday cards for Marissa Center 3: Little Learning Cards- They will color each card and cut them out.
