Thursday: Computer

Calendar:  Discussed calendar in English and Spanish. Lucas put the number on the calendar and told us the weather.  He reviewed our shape, colors, Spanish words and Sign Language words.  Lucas told us the day of the week and month of the year in Spanish. We said all our days of the week and months of the year. We also counted to 20 in English and Spanish.  

Creative Development:  Discussed:  When have you used a computer?  Some people use the computer to send letters or to talk with others.  What are the parts of a computer?  We looked at my real laptop and discussed the parts of the computer. The children will make their own computers in afternoon centers.

Language and Literacy:  Discussed:  How do computers know what to do? We give computers commands by clicking on buttons or typing.  We looked at the real Laptop and I clicked on a button and we watched what the computer did.  Discussed how did the computer know to do that? We talked about the internet and how we can find games there to play.  We got to play games with Elmo and discussed how the computer knew to do that.  I had the Brain Box which was a cube that told us to do something on each side of it.  Each child came up one at a time and rolled the dice to see what command it landed on the children followed the command.  Commands on the Brain Box: wave hello, jump 2 times, make a Circle with your fingers, tiptoe to something purple in the room, spin around 1 time, walk to something blue in the room.  

Mathematics and Reasoning: Discussed:  Did you know that computers allow you to send letters, read information, talk and watch videos?  They also help you solve problems. We wrote the number 1 on the wipe off board.  A child went and got 1 object.  We counted to one and counted out body parts that we had one of.  We then had a child go get 2 objects and Miss Kelly wrote the number 2 on the wipe off board.  We counted to two and counted out two body parts.  We put 1 +2 on the wipe off board and discussed if we counted the objects that the children brought over then we have 3 objects all together. Discussed how 1 + 2= 3.  

Language and Literacy:   Discussed:  Who do you know that lives far away?  What do you think it would be like to see them and talk to them? We had a box that had a square large hole cut in both ends so it looked like a computer screen.  We invited a child one at a time to come up and look at us through the box.  They pretended to be in the computer talking to us from far away.  Each child took turns doing this.  

Afternoon Centers:  Center 1:  Outside Play  Center 2:  Computer Art-  Each child colored their computer patterns.  They also colored their mouse.  We then helped them to assemble their computers.
