Dec 17, 2012   //   by Miss Kim   //   Daily Lessons  //  No Comments

Calendar:  Discussed calendar in English and Spanish.  Lucas is the calendar and meteorologist boy for this week.  He was not here today so we did it together.  We reviewed our colors, shapes and Sign language words.  We also worked on singing our Christmas songs.

Brainstorm/Fun Facts:  We reviewed what we learned about singing.  The children told me everything they know about Candles.  What makes light in the darkness?  Fun Facts:  The Egyptians and  Cretans made candles from beeswax, as early as 3000 BC.  Candles were traditionally used to light up Christmas trees before electric lights.  Candles are used in 7 out of 10 U.S. households.  There are more than 350 makers of candles in the U. S.  Candle manufacturers’ surveys show that 96% of all candles purchased are bought by women.

Creative Development:  Discussed:  What sound does a burning candle make?  Some candles can make a crackling sound.  We looked at the Candle Wreath they may make in afternoon centers if time between singing.

Mathematics and Reasoning: Discussed:  How does a candle help you see at night?  We looked at the picture cards and discussed each object.

Physical Development:  Discussed:  What are the different parts of a candle?  A candle has the wax, wick and a flame.  We looked at their My Little Journals and discussed the red page.  They will make candles with red paint and add a flame.

Science:  Why do candles need wax?  Wax is used for candles because it keeps the wick from burning too fast and repels water.  I showed the children how to draw with a wax candle.  We then colored over it with watercolor paint and watched the drawing appear.  If time the children will make their own drawing.

Show and Tell:  The children each brought a red item. Each child came up one at a time to show their item and show us the red.

Afternoon Centers:  Center 1: Wooden Blocks/ Signing Christmas songs.   Center 2:  Candle Wreath if time  Center 3:  My Little Journal red page if time and Drawing a picture with candle wax if time.
