Tuesday: Chrysalis

Mar 19, 2013   //   by Miss Kim   //   Daily Lessons  //  No Comments

Calendar:  Discussed the date in English and Spanish and wrote it in number form. Lucas told us the weather, found the day of the week in Spanish and put the number on the calendar.  He also discussed the pattern on the calendar.  Lucas reviewed our colors, shapes, Spanish and Sign language.

Fun Facts/Brainstorming:  We reviewed what we learned yesterday about caterpillars.  Today the children told me what they knew about the Chrysalis.  They needed help with this because they forgot what it was.  Fun facts:  Chrysalis is the growth stage between caterpillars and butterflies.  The chrysalis is covered in a hard, shell.  In the chrysalis stage, wings are fully formed, antennae are formed and the chewing mouth parts of the caterpillar are transformed into the sucking mouth parts of the butterfly.

Language and Literacy:  Discussed:  What would you do if you woke up with wings? I read the title of our I Can Read book “Lifecycle of a Butterfly.”  The children told me what they thought the book would be about from the title.  I had to describe what “lifecyle” was.  We read the book 2 times and discussed.  We pulled out the words that the children knew.

Mathematics and Reasoning: Discussed: How long do you sleep?  What do you do when you wake up?  We figured out that a few of the children get 10 hours of sleep at night.  We looked at the counting card 16.  The children told me the number and we counted the shapes on the card.  I had one child at a time come up and lay on the large blanket.  I then rolled them up in the blanket to make them a Chrysalis.  We all counted to 16 and then that child unrolled themselves to get out and fly away as a beautiful butterfly.  Each child had a turn and thought this was really fun.  We took some cute pictures.

Physical Development: Discussed:  Do you have a snack before bedtime?  The children told me what I had to do before I touched food.  I went and washed my hands.  We took one large round cracker for the head.  Four pieces of pepperoni for the body.  We broke 5 pretzel sticks in half to make the legs and antennae.  We used 3 gummy life-savors for the eyes and mouth.  The children each put their own caterpillar together and then we ate them up.

Science:  Discussed:  What color chrysalis would you make if you were a caterpillar? We looked at their My Little Journals yellow page.  We talked about how to take a yellow piece of paper and roll it up to make a chrysalis to put on that page.  We will do this in afternoon centers.

Afternoon Centers:  Center 1: Community Helper toys  Center 2: My Little Journal-  The children will go to the yellow page and color the paint brush yellow.  They will then use a yellow piece of paper to roll up and make a Chrysalis.    Center 3:  I Can Read Book-  the children will write their names on the book and practice reading it to the teachers.
