Friday: What Makes Me Surprised?

Calendar:  Discussed the date in English and Spanish and wrote it in number form.   Thomas put the number on the calendar, discussed the weather and found the day of  the week in Spanish.  He reviewed the color, shape, Spanish words (boy, grandma, dog, school) and Sign Language word (more).

Fun Facts/Brainstorming:  Reviewed what we learned about what makes us sad.  Today the children told us What makes them surprised.

Science:  Discussed:  Where do you put your trash?  Explained that garbage trucks take trash to be buried in big holes called dumps.  If you recycle some of your garbage, it gets used again to make new products.  We had three bins set up so the children could recycle items depending on what they are. One bin was for paper/cardboard, another bin for glass/cans and the third bin was for plastic.  The children came up one at a time and decided what it was made out of and which bin it belonged in.  We did this until all the items were recycled.  We then colored our Eco Kids Badge in centers to remind them to recycle.

Mathematics and Reasoning:  Discussed:  What surprises you?  We looked at the pattern guide and discussed the present and spider.  We talked about how they could surprise us.  They children then helped continue the pattern: spider, present,  spider, present.  We  then came up with harder patterns: spider, present, present, spider, present, present.

Language and Literacy:  Discussed:  What do you think a surprise party is?  We looked at our Rebus Reader and discussed the title, “The Surprise Party”.  We looked at the picture cards and when I held that card up while I read the children would say the word.  They helped me read the story using the pictures for clues on the words.  I then asked questions after we read to check for comprehension.  Questions:  Why was the cat sad?  (everyone forgot his birthday)  What did the dog give the cat?  (bone)  Why was the cat happy at the end of the story?  (The animals had a surprise birthday party for the cat)

Creative Development: Discussed:  Do you have toys that surprise you?  I had the children go hide around the room.  I counted to 10. When I said “10” they all jumped out and surprised me!!  We did this several times because they were having so much fun.  We then looked at the Peek-a-Boo Surprise Art and I had it jump and surprise the kids.  I showed them how they could surprise their parents with this craft.

Physical Development: Discussed:  What does your face look like when you feel surprised?  Discussed the shape of our face, mouth and eyes when we are surprised.  We Looked at My Little Journal and went to the circle page.  We drew a Surprise face on that page.

Afternoon Centers:  Center 1:Outside play Center 2: Eco Kids Badge- The children colored their badge to remind them to recycle.  Center 3:  My Little Journal- The children went to the page with the circle on it.  They drew a large circle to make one big face.  They then added the facial features to make the face “surprised”.
