Tuesday: Sunrise/Sunset

Oct 6, 2013   //   by Miss Kim   //   Daily Lessons  //  No Comments

Calendar:  Discussed the date in English and Spanish and wrote it in number form.  Abby put the number on the calendar, discussed the weather, and found the day of the week in Spanish. She reviewed all our colors, shapes, sight words, Spanish and Sign Language words.

Fun Facts/Brainstorming:  Today the children learned about small pets and Sunrise and Sunset combined both lessons since Miss Kim was sick yesterday.  The children told me what they know about the Sunrise and Sunset.  They then told me what they know about farms.

Language and Literacy:  Discussed:  What would you keep in a barn? The children brainstormed animals that they would find in a barn and they recreated the sounds they would make.  We looked at the animals in the barn they were going to color in afternoon centers.

Creative Development: Discussed:  What noise would you make to wake up the farm?  We looked at the red color wand and discussed the color.  Explained that roosters are known for crowing when the sun is coming up and are sometimes called the “farm’s alarm clock”.  We looked at the rooster masks the children will be making in afternoon centers.  We all crowed like a rooster to wake everyone up.

Physical Development: Discussed:  Which farm animal would you want to be? Why?  We looked at the Theme Poster and discussed the animals. The children made the noises of each animal.

Mathematics and Reasoning:  Discussed:  What different shapes can you make with your hands? The children made a circle, triangle, and rectangle with their hands.  We looked at the box with the secret shape in it. The children had to guess what shape was in the box.  I told them to tell me what the pictures were on the box and what shapes those pictures made. They then knew that the shape was a triangle.  We discussed the triangle and that it has three angles, sides and points.  We found triangles in the room.

Science:  Discussed:  What colors have you seen in the sky?  Explained that during sunrise and sunset, we may see pink, orange or red in the sky.

Show and Tell:  The children were to wear red today and bring a triangular shaped item.  We had each child stand up and find all the red on their clothing using the red wand.  We then counted how many people had red and how many did not wear read and discussed more and less.  The children then came up one at a time to show their triangular items.  They told us about their items and why they brought them. We also discussed the shape.

Afternoon Centers:  Center 1:Outside play Center 2: Barn Door Craft-The children practiced writing their name on the barn. They then colored the animal and drew their favorite farm animal in the barn. Center 3:  Rooster Mask-The children colored the mask yellow. They then glued on the roosters comb and waddle. They then glued on a triangle sponge for the beak. The children wore their finished mask around crowing.
