Friday: Planting Seeds

Oct 6, 2013   //   by Miss Kim   //   Daily Lessons  //  No Comments

Calendar:  Discussed the date in English and Spanish and wrote it in number form. Abby put the number on the calendar, discussed the pattern, weather and found the day of the week in Spanish.  She reviewed the colors, shapes, Spanish and Sign Language.

Fun Facts/Brainstorming:  Reviewed what the children learned about chickens.  Today the children told me what they know about seeds.  What kinds of seeds have they seen?  Discussed what we do to plant seeds?

Creative DevelopmentDiscussed: How big is a seed?  Every child got a wipe off board.  They each drew one seed on the board.  I called them up one at a time to bring up their board. We compared their seed with my seed and then compared them with all the seeds everyone drew.  We discussed if it was bigger or smaller.

Language and Literacy:  Discussed:  Do you prefer to read in the morning, afternoon or night?  Explained that having a farm is a lot of work, but there is also time to relax.  We looked at the book, “There’s a Cow in My House.”  We discussed the concepts of print: front cover, back cover, author, illustrator, title page.  The children predicted what they thought the story was going to be about by the title.  We read the story and then discussed.  Asked questions, after reading the story to check for comprehension.

Mathematics and Reasoning: Discussed: How do you take care of a seed?   We looked at the Pattern Guide and discussed the pattern. The children continued the pattern by adding the correct picture.  I then changed the pattern and the children continued that as well.

Science: Discussed:  How can too much sun hurt seeds?  How can too much water hurt seeds?  Discussed the different weather that is good or bad for seeds.

Social and Emotional Development:  Discussed:  How can you help others by planting seeds? We looked at their My Little Journals with the 12 on it.  Discussed how they will draw themselves and a friend on the page.  Explained that when you plant seeds, the food that grows can help feed others.  Discussed how the garden we grew at daycare fed other people.  We then discussed if one child on the page made six dots with paint and the other child made 6 then how many seeds would that be on the page? We did the math problem on the board.  Discussed how 6 plus 6 is 12.

Afternoon Centers:  Center 1:Outside play Center 2: My Little Journal-The children will go to the page with 12 on it.  They drew two people on the page.  They dipped their finger into paint and put six dots “seeds” for one person and 6 for the other to equal 12 seeds planted on the page.
