Calendar: Discussed calendar in English and Spanish. Will is the calendar and weather boy this week.  He found the numbers for the calendar.  He told us the weather and changed the weather chart.

Brainstorm/Fun Facts: Reviewed what they learned about lions.  Today the children told me what they know about pond Turtles.  This month’s theme is about ponds.  Discussed:  What do you know about ponds?  This month we will explore insects, animals and plants that live near a pond.   Fun Facts:  The first known turtles existed 200 million years ago.  Turtles are cold-blooded.  All turtles lay their eggs on land.  Some land turtles can out run a human.  They may feed on plants and insects.  We looked at pictures of turtles.

Visual Art:  Discussed:  What do you think it would be like to have a shell on your back?  Turtles are born with a shell.  It grows as they grow!    We had 3 different sizes of bowls and 3 different sizes of toy items that would fit under the bowls.  I had a child come up and find the small toy item and put it under the small bowl.  I then had another child find the medium item and put it under the medium bowl and another child get the large item and put it under the large bowl.  We mixed the bowls up and I had a child put them in largest to smallest order.  We then discussed what items were under each bowl and why it was so easy for them to figure that out.

Social Skills:  Discussed:  How do you think a turtle eats?  Did you know that turtles don’t have teeth?  Some turtles snap their mouths and grab their food.  Others stretch out their necks and swallow food whole, while others crush food with their strong jaws.  We used our thumb and finger to move up and down like a snapping turtle.  I held up each child’s name tag and if it was their name then they came up to get it.  If it was not their name then they sat quietly.  We had to go through some of the names twice for those children that did not recognize their name.

Visual Art:  Discussed:  What do you think a turtle eats?  Did you know that a turtle eats many different kinds of things including plants, bugs, fish, spiders and small creatures that land nearby? We looked at the Shape Surprise Box and each child took a guess on what object they thought was inside the box.  We then looked at the shape and it was a purple diamond.  Discussed the shape in detail.  They even told me how to draw a diamond on the wipe off board.  Show and Tell:  Each child stood up one at a time and showed the purple that they wore today on their clothing.  We then counted how many children wore purple and how many did not and compared.

Speaking:  Discussed: What other living things do you think you will find in a pond?  We looked at the new Theme Poster for the month.  I had a child come up and find a certain pond animal or bug.  They counted how many they saw and then did that action back to their seats.

Afternoon Centers: Center 1: Large Cardboard Blocks  Center 2:   Name Tags-Each child will practice writing their names.   Center 3:  Turtle Pull Toy-  They will glue the bowl onto the turtle pattern.  They will then take tissue paper pieces and glue them onto the bowl “shell”.
